Ipoh
Ipoh, the state capital of Perak, is located in the rich tin bearing valley of the Kinta River, approximately 200km (125 miles) north of Kuala Lumpur via the North-South Expressway. The name Ipoh was originated from a local tree, whose poisonous resin was once used by indigenous people for hunting.
The city of Ipoh grew up as a mining town and during the British Colonial Era, it was the second city of Malaysia. Its railway station, situated in the “old town” of Ipoh is an excellent example of the architecture of this period. Today, Ipoh has developed significantly.
Ipoh is also famous for its local cuisine. The early Chinese immigrants who poured into the state brought with them the cooking style of their provinces and these cooking styles blended well with the local and a new breed of food came about. Many people have traveled to this city just to taste its variety of great food. The most popular food is Ipoh “Hor Fun” or flat rice noodle.

Penang is rich in history and sights. Located on the northwest coast of Peninsular Malaysia by the Straits of Malacca, Penang offers a large variety of places to visit, from cultural temples to ancient building. Kulim is a major town and district situated at the South East of Kedah state. The town has grown from a small residential area back in the 50s into one of Malaysia’s top industrial park area. It is connected to nearby Butterworth in Penang via a short expressway.
Around the year 1990 till 1995, Kulim was infamous for having lots of paddy fields. In Malaysia, Kedah and Perlis are the leading states that produce rice to sustain country’s demand and also for export. However, much has changed over the years and now only a few of those fields are left.
Like Ipoh, Kulim also got its name from a tree. This particular tree is valued for its wood usage and during 1997, the value of Kulim tree per m³ was about RM 270. | Alor Setar
Alor Star is the state capital of Kedah and Kota Setar District’s Administrative Center. Granted city status on 21st December 2003, Alor Star is the major distribution center for manufacturing and agricultural products such as paddy.
The city, which has an urban population of approximately 400,000, is one of the region’s oldest cities and the last major stop before the Thai border. It has useful transport links to the east coast as well as to Thailand.
Alor Star is the only state capital in west coast of Peninsular Malaysia that is rich in Malay heritage. It is also the birth place of a few famous Malaysian personalities, including two former Prime Ministers of Malaysia, YTM Tunku Abdul Rahman and Tun Dr. Mahathir Bin Mohamad. Despite the development and being the state capital, tourists are able to enjoy the scenic view of paddy plantation around the outskirt of the city.

Padang Besar is a border town located at northern part of Perlis state and on the border with Songkhla province of Thailand, about 35km northeast of Kangar and 70km southwest of Hatyai. The town opposite Padang Besar in Thailand is also known as Padang Besar, although locals usually refer to the town as “Pekan Siam” or Siamese town.
The town is a popular destination for Malaysians due to its duty-free open markets in the neutral territory between the two countries. Recognized as the bargain-hunters’ paradise, the town is filled with textiles, clothing, handicraft, foodstuff, fruits and souvenirs.
Padang Besar also acts as the checkpoint for road and railway as it is located near to Thailand. Many Malaysians travel up to Thailand through this point and likewise for their Thai counterparts for shopping, business and recreational trips. | Johor Bahru
Johor Bahru is the state capital city of Johor, located at the southern tip of Malaysia. Abbreviated as JB, it is the fourth most populated city in Malaysia with a population of approximately 867,000 in the city. It is also a significant industrial, tourism and commercial hub for southern Malaysia.
Connected to Singapore by road and rail via a modern causeway, JB is within walking distance from Singapore and receives more than 60% of the country’s annual 16 million foreign tourists.

Lumut is well known for its beautiful seashell and coral handicraft. Situated about 84km south of Ipoh - the capital of Perak, the town is the gateway to Pangkor Island. It takes approximately 30-35 minutes to get to the island from the Jetty.
Lumut is Malay mean moss, lichen or seaweed. In its early days, the beach is said to be rich in moss, hence the local people called it Lumut. The once little-known fishing town has since become the home base of the Royal Malaysian Navy.
The best time to visit Lumut is between the months of October and November, when the Annual Sea Festival or “Pesta Laut” is held. There are sea sports competitions, cultural shows and food fairs for everybody to enjoy regardless of age limit.
Other place of attraction to visit is Teluk Batik Beach, which is located about 6km away. |
